Johnson leads way behind the plate: Barr & DeWolfe deliver …..

Former Milwaukee Brewer draft pick catcher Aaron Johnson leads Royals in season opener

In 2006 the Milwaukee Brewers drafted catcher Aaron Johnson – and for those in attendance at Kiwanis Park Monday afternoon it was easy to see why.  The  Moncton franchise known for their speed and aggressive base running were gunned down early and again late by the former University of Illinois All Star catcher.  With the Royals clinging to a 1 run lead – having only managed the 1 hit – a Dave Barr homerun off starter Simon Boucher the Fisher Cats opened the 5th with back to back base runners.  Using a play they run often – the fake bunt double steal – Johnson gunned down the lead runner at third base by a good 5 feet.  Reliever Jake Waugh then induced the next 2 hitters to ground out ending the Moncton threat.

The game was a tightly pitched affair between both starters – Boucher for Moncton and Bishop for the Royals with both throwing up zeros across the board.  Bishop worked 4 scoreless before giving way to Waugh who went 2 for the hold.  Shawn Reid pitched the 7th for the save.

The Moncton Ace Boucher went 5 complete for the Fisher Cats before giving way to lefty Ben Sallows.  Boucher was very effective, keeping the Royals off balance early making only 2 mistakes, fastballs up and over the plate – one an early homerun to Barr and the other a 3 run double to DeWolfe in the 5th.  Mike Ivey plated the lone Fisher Cat run with a double off the right field wall in the 6th.

Royals play their first game at home this Friday Night at 7:30 vs these same Moncton Fisher Cats
