Keeping with the trend over the past 11 games, the Royals got the sticks going early and often in a 13-3 victory over the Hub City Brewers.
After putting together 22 hits in their 14-8 win Wednesday night, the Royals put together 15 hits, including four home runs, Friday night. Leading the way for the Royals was Mark MacNevin, who was 2 for 2 with a home run, a double and a pair of walks while Mike Washburn strung together his second straight 4 for 5 game, which included a double, two home runs and 5 RBIs.
“The guy right now is hotter than, I don’t even know,” said manager Mike Lint about his young slugger. “Words can’t even describe it. Right now you just can’t get him out. We’ve got a great hitting lineup, but I mean that’s a 21 year old man that’s just hitting everything. Even his outs are hard hit.”
What hasn’t been part of the trend during the winning streak is the Royals allowing less than four runs in a game. Over the span of their 11 game win streak the Royals have allowed less than four runs just three times (including last night).
Cue Jake Waugh. Waugh is the league leader in wins and Friday night he got his fifth win, going 6 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits and 5 walks. While Waugh did more than enough to earn the victory, it was refreshing to see the Royals keep their opponent to less than four runs. Lint knows those walks can come back to haunt a team.
“We’ve talked at length about walking guys, the other night in Moncton we walked 10 guys and hit a guy, that’s 11 free base runners that we put on base. Out of their eight runs I think six were from free base runners. For Jake to come out tonight and do that, and that’s what an ace does, he’s the ace of our staff, and that’s what we asked him to do, and he came out and gave us a solid outing.”
Joining Washburn on the home run train were Derek Wilson, and Mark MacNevin. Washburn credits his teammates for his recent success through creating a fun laidback environment.
“It’s pretty fun to play with a group of guys like this, it allows you to relax. With all these guys around you, you could have a night with four or five hits any night of the week.
“I just try to see the ball and hit the ball. Try to have some fun. That’s all I’m trying to do.”
