The team will be sporting their pink breast cancer jerseys, as well as an array of other pink accessories, including pink tape, pink batting gloves and pink shoelaces. The Ironmen have also been contacted about the event and will also be sporting pink accessories.

VP of Baseball Operations and Major Sponsor Kristian Dewar says that following the game a tally of how much money was made from the game will be done, and a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society on behalf of the Royals.

“It’s the same price, $5 admission and once we get everything together we will make a donation. And of course we have a great game sponsor in the Delta Fredericton, who will be at the park. They are also a big supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society, so it works out great for us.”

One of the Royals who have been directly affected by cancer is first baseman and catcher Jody Peterson, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago.

“Unfortunately today, it seems as though cancer affects almost every family. With my mom, she dealt with it head on, she tackled it with a positive frame of mind and that very much made it seemno different than her battling the flu. Clearly she was in a much more concerning situation than the flu but we were never aware that it was more than that for her. She was strong, determined and committed.   Today, eight years later she’s healthy, extremely active and enjoying life to its fullest. That’s my mom – tough, she’s a fighter.”

Traditionally Baseball for Breast Cancer has been good to the Royals, as they have won both games, with last year’s being a dramatic finish.

“I’ve been pretty fortunate to hit well on those nights, homering in each game for my mom, with last year’s being a walk off to win, said Peterson. “Being able to do that on a special night for her is pretty neat. I will remember those games.”

With the pink jerseys coming out, Peterson isn’t concerned about the way the team will look either.

“We have a pretty good looking team, but I think John Burns looks great in pink, it brings out his smile.”
First pitch for the Royals is set for 7:30 at Baseball Hill. Wear some pink and come on out to the game in support of a great cause.
